June 9, 2009
The CUNY School of Professional Studies’ 2009 commencement was fabulous. Excited graduates were admired by overjoyed family members, friends, SPS faculty and staff. Our commencement speakers were inspirational. Sarah Morgano, the student speaker, gave a heartfelt talk with intelligence and poise. She spoke about the importance of her education not just as a means to provide opportunities for her daughter, but as a way to show her daughter how to create opportunities of her own. Louise Mirrer gave a thoughtful and witty talk about Abraham Lincoln and his passion and commitment to lifelong learning, and his belief that education is the most important subject which we as people can be engaged in. She applauded the graduates for their dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and urged them to continue that pursuit both in and out of the classroom.
The 2009 commencement marked the awarding of SPS’s first Bachelor of Science in Business degrees. Eleven BS in Business degrees were conferred along with 33 Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Culture. Certificate and Advanced Certificates were awarded to ninety-two graduates from SPS’s programs in Disability Studies, Immigration Law, Public Administration and Public Policy, Diversity, Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Organizational Studies.
Graduates, faculty, staff and guests were honored to be joined by CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, Trustee and Chairperson of the University Student Senate Simone Lamont, and President of the Graduate School and University Center William Kelly.
SPS congratulates the class of 2009 on achieving this important milestone and offers best wishes for the future. |
